Let the Eating Season Begin!

Its November which means the start of one of my favorite seasons... The "eating season". Thanksgiving is right around the corner and like so many others I can't wait for the fantastic food! For those of you who are pregnant, trying to conceive or currently in the process of shedding that baby weight, it may be difficult to eat healthy when there is so much food in front of you.

I would like to hear how you mamas out there balance eating right during pregnancy with the "eating season".

Do you have a fantastic healthy recipe to share? Advise or tips on how to control your cravings? Lets all help one another enjoy this season the right way. Post your comments here and invite other mamas to join in on the conversation.

Prenatal Exercise Questions Answered

I found this article about prenatal exercise to be very informative. I can attest that I wasn't exactly an exercise buff before my pregnancy, but I really wanted to try to do the right thing about staying healthy during my pregnancy; however my fears about "hurting" the baby hindered my ability to establish a healthy workout routine. Check it out and let me know what you think.

Sun Safety

This year on Memorial Day, I had the bright idea of bringing out the baby pool for Kayla to have some splash time fun, I enlisted my husband and sister to make sure everything was set up and perfect for Kayla's first backyard pool experience.

Swimsuit.... check
Pool....check

Sunblock... Huh? We are Black (African American) do we need sunblock?

For many years I operated under the assumption that being African American I didn't need sunblock because my darker skin would protect me from UVA and UVB rays, so it never dawned on me to pick any up for my daughter, but once I felt the heat of the sun and looked at her little face, I knew I needed to make sure she was protected. I now know that my assumption was incorrect and African Americans do need sunscreen/sunblock to protect our skin from sun damage and prevent skin cancer. I have learned from my experience and want to pass on some summer sun safety to all you mamas out there that are important regardless of your ethnicity.

According to The American Academy of Pediatrics http://www.aap.org/ , The Mayo Clinic http://www.mayoclinic.org/ and The Center For Disease Control http://www.cdc.gov/ here are the best ways to ensure proper sun safety for you and your little ones:

Keep babies 6 months and under out of direct sun exposure, this can be achieved by using the shade of a tree, canopy, hat or umbrella.

Wear cool comfortable lightweight clothing

Use a broad spectrum sunscreen/sunblock as this will protect against UVA and UVB rays.

Use a sunscreen/sunblock with a minimum of SPF15, the greater the SPF or the "star" rating the more sun protection.

For sensitive areas such as the nose, cheek, top of ears and shoulders use a sunscreen/ sunblock containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.

For small babies under 6 months sunscreen/sunblock should be applied to small areas like the face and back of hands; for all others sunscreen/sunblock should be applied to ALL exposed areas of skin 30 minutes before sun exposure and reapplied every 2 hours ( more if swimming).
There are organic sunscreens/sunblocks available for pregnant women or others concerned with some of the chemicals found in sun block products.

Skin Cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. Sun damage is a preventable risk factor for ALL skin cancers. Please keep your self and your family safe!

10 (surprising!) Prenatal Power Foods | Pregnancy Information, Pregnancy Calendar Week by Week, Tools at Fit Pregnancy

I recently had a great conversation with an expectant father about his wife and her dietary needs during pregnancy. In this conversation we discussed how she is unable to take a prenatal vitamin with iron and is looking to foods rich with nutrients to supplement her needs.

I found this related article on http://www.fitpregnancy.com/ and wanted to share!

Time to get serious about losing that baby weight!

As my daughter's first birthday approaches, I realize I have yet to lose those extra pounds I picked up during pregnancy. So tonight I will be trying Zumba for the first time! Lets hope this doesn't turn out like my first spinning experience... I wont go into details, but it ended with me on the floor panting and a woman well into her 60's standing over me laughing about how I couldn't keep up with her.

My Aunt Renea and favorite (only) Sister in Law Maquia and I have each picked out "dream outfits" that we would like to fit and wear to dinner in August, so I have until then to work it out and wear this exotic beaded top http://www.bostonproper.com/ (YIKES).

I am not sure how I am going to pull this off, but I hope I have fun trying. I would love to hear how you all have either shed those baby pounds or are in the process of shedding them now. In the weeks to come I will also keep you posted on great places to exercise around Columbus, OH before, during and after pregnancy!

Chloasma- What is that?

Ever heard of Chloasma; commonly known as the mask of pregnancy? Chloasma is the darkening of the skin mostly on the forehead, nose and cheeks right below the eyes during pregnancy. These darkened patches typically goes away after childbirth ( I've heard that before!), but here is a tip to help... try Aloe Vera gel, this is said to be a safe and natural way to lighten those areas during pregnancy, it also helps to eat foods containing folic acid.

Kent Family Chiropractic

I had the opportunity to meet with two extraordinary people this week; Dr. Aaron and Dr. Crista of Kent Family Chiropractic on N. State Street in Westerville, Ohio. This is a new facility to the area so I stopped by to learn more about the practice and its services to expectant mothers and babies. Dr. Crista gave me a tour of the open adjustment, private adjustment and the children's adjustment areas (My Favorite). You have to check out their super cute adjustable Dr. Seuss Characters! I then spent time speaking with both Doctors about their services and philosophy. I wanted to find a way to bring awareness and education to the Columbus, Ohio and its surrounding communities about the benefits of Chiropractic care for expectant mothers and babies and left the office confident that Kent Family Chiropractic's philosophy on healing and education coupled with their passion to put clients needs and well being above all makes them a wonderful addition to the area. Welcome! Stay tuned for more great things to come involving The Mama Mosaic and Kent Family Chiropractic. Contact the office today to learn more!

The Birth of a Novel: Josie Brown’s THE BABY PLANNER Is Nurtured by the Profession it Touts

(New York) – Conception is a blessed event, be it a child‘s, or a new book. That is novelist Josie Brown‘s contention. She should know. The idea for her fourth novel, The Baby Planner [Simon & Schuster/Gallery Books]—about a childless woman who channels her nurturing instincts toward her pregnant clients—was born in the reception area of her mammogram center.
I picked up the only reading material available: a local parenting magazine, explains Brown, who lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. My own children are older, so it wasn‘t necessarily something I felt might interest me.
She was wrong. Brown came across an article about a woman who had started a consulting business to pregnant and new mothers. She called herself a baby planner.‘ That threw me for a loop! I think I actually laughed out loud because I‘d never heard of such a thing.
The first thing that came to mind was a wedding planner. But the article explained that the role of a baby planner goes much further than helping stressed out and overworked pregnant clients set up nurseries, plan their baby showers, or shop for onesies. She is integral in connecting clients with those who will nurture them, from conception through their toddlers‘ first years, explains Brown. If the mother wants to consider a doula or midwife, or if she is clueless about all the baby gear on the market, or unaware of ways in which she can baby-proof or even green-proof her home. And, if the mother asks, her baby planner can even connect her child with playgroups, or find the best match in a preschool.

Right there and then, the concept for the book was fully born: beginning, middle and end. Brown laughs. In fact, the arc of the story takes place over nine months: the time in which it takes to carry a baby to term.
What appealed to Brown wasn‘t just the role her heroine would play in her clients‘ lives, but the place they would hold in her heart. ―Pregnancy is one of the happiest—and one of the most stressful times in a woman‘s life, explains Brown, a mother of a son and daughter. Your hormones are surging. Your body is stretched out, and a living being is moving around inside of you. Katie lives vicariously through her clients.

Like many of the women who have become baby planners, the novel‘s heroine, Katie Johnson, falls into the profession quite by happenstance. She loses her job as a consumer product advocate during state budget cutbacks, Brown says. She would love to have children, but her husband is against it. When she learns that one of her sisters is pregnant again, Katie takes it upon herself to weed through all the products that her sister doesn‘t have time to check into: which is the safest car seat and crib, whether she should use plastic or cloth diapers and much more. When others hear about the service, her reputation is made. But the novel‘s tension revolves around the choices Katie makes for herself.
Not surprisingly, the book is being embraced by those who can relate best to its heroine: baby planners.

In the months since the novel‘s pre-order page popped up in online bookstores, Brown has been contacted from baby planners from all over world. I‘ve gotten emails from cities across the US, Canada, the UK, as well as Brazil, Peru, and Japan even Bahrain. The response has been incredible.

One of the baby planners who connected with Brown is Mary Oscategui, the founder and director of the International Academy of Baby Planner Professionals. Says Brown: ―She was so welcoming of the idea that I offered to give her an advance reading copy.

As it turns out, the women live just a few miles away from each other. Another coincidence: Oscategui was the baby planner featured in the article that had initially inspired Brown. We didn‘t figure that out until after the end of our initial meet up, says Brown. I only realized it when Mary mentioned she‘d once lived in the town mentioned in the article. That was when I realized how much great karma surrounds the birth of this book.

The Baby Planner hits bookstore shelves on April 5, 2011.
Oscategui‘s enthusiasm for the novel led her to rally other baby planners to follow her lead and host Brown at showers at local baby boutiques, where the books will also be sold. A full list of party dates, as well as the locations of participating stores, demonstrators and sponsors can be found on Brown‘s website: http://www.babyplannernovel.com. Cities on the list include Chicago; New York; Hoboken; Washington, DC; San Jose, CA; Walnut Creek, CA; Denver; Seattle; San Francisco; Mill Valley, CA; Los Angeles; Santa Barbara; La Jolla; and Newport Beach, California.
All moms, pregnant and otherwise, are invited to join in on the fun. Just like a real baby shower, there will be wholesome goodies to sample, wellness demonstrations, baby clothes to coo over, games to play And some momsavvy swag. New mothers are an audience which many companies are courting. One of them, Sprout Organic Baby Food, has signed on as a national sponsor for Brown‘s tour. The company was co-founded by celebrity chef, author and father Tyler Florence, and grew out of his interest in infant and toddler nutrition.
Another national sponsor, Wonder Bumpers, the #1 doctor-recommended crib-safe bedding will be giving a prize drawing at each event; and other sponsors include EcoStoreUSA, makers of a line of bio-safe cleaning products; Beaba USA baby food prep; Kiwi Magazine, for parents interested in organic products; Spiffies dental and teething wipes for infants; and SingleMindedWomen.com, which has a channel devoted to single mothers; Shaklee Products; Art Bellies pregnancy portraits; Prince Lionheart rockers; Dr. Karp‘s The Happiest Baby on the Block parenting programs; Minted.com custom invitations; Mother‘s Milk Tea; Bloomin‘ Belly Soaps; and The Eco Breast Pump, an eco-friendly and BPA-free hospital grade product, made by Hygeia.
Of course, Brown will be there to read scenes from her novel, The Baby Planner. Baby planners are embracing me in the same way in which I show my heroine nurtures her clients, says Brown. For an author, this kind of groundswell is a dream come true.

Why Didn't I Think Of That?

All you current and soon to be mamas, Have you used or seen the Nanny Caddy at Polaris Fashion Place... I absolutely love it! I was sitting outside the kids play area and needed a bib to feed my daughter and out the corner of my eye I saw a vending machine that I may have seen baby wipes in. I thought to myself, why would a vending machine have wipes, so I wheeled Kayla over to investigate and sure enough it was a Nanny Caddy. A fully stocked vending machine with on the go necessities like, Bibsters (yay!), wipes, formula and more. I am kicking myself for not thinking of this first. Learn more about Nanny Caddy and its locations here www.nannycaddy.com

Unfortunately, the only location currently in Ohio is at Polaris, but take a look to see what they have and where else you can find one while traveling.

What I'm Reading...

My primary goal with The Mama Mosaic is to provide guidance, education, resources and assistance to expectant mothers. The reason I do this is so my clients can have less stress and more time to enjoy their pregnancies. Expectant mothers should have time to prepare mentally, physically and emotionally for the birth of their child. Keeping with this notion, I stumbled upon the book BETTER BIRTH; The Ultimate Guide to Childbirth from Home Births to Hospitals, by Denise Spatafora. This book speaks to getting back to the joy and celebration of pregnancy. I am currently reading this and encourage you to as well. Check back for my thoughts on the book and post yours too!

Central Ohio Facing a Shortage of Mother's Milk

Just today I heard reports of a shortage of donor breast milk across the nation. The Mothers Milk Bank of Central Ohio ships donor milk to 12 hospitals across the country and Canada. Recently increased demands have attributed to a shortage; hospitals normally recieve six weeks of milk supply, but are only recieving 10 days because of the shortage.

Donor Milk is important because when mothers are unable to provide breastmilk, pastuerized donor milk is used to provide nutrients, imunity protections, growth hormones, development enzymes, infection fighting and immunological factors found in own mothers milk.

If you are currently a lactating woman or know one willing and able to donate milk please contact the Mothers Milk Bank of Central Ohio at 614-544-0810.

"To become a volunteer donor, mothers must take part in a stringent screening process to ensure the quality and safety of the milk." find out more on www.ohiohealthonline.com under maternity services. or email milkbank@ohiohealth.com

A Mama's Top Valentine's Day Wishes!

It is almost Valentine's Day and while other women will be receiving flowers and candy here is what Expectant Mama's Really Want:

Rest and Relaxation... Oh you didn't think we meant sleep did you? A maternity massage at The Charles Penzone Grand Salon will do just fine (Love Ya!)

Time Away... Far far away, now is a great time to book that babymoon we have been talking about. Just think of the love I will feel when I see those plane tickets.

Seriously, those are some great Valentine's Day ideas if they are within your budget, but here is what Pregnancy and Newborn Magazine www.pnmag.com lists as no nonsense Valentine's Day Gifts for 2011:

An impeccably clean house
Eight hours of peaceful uninterrupted sleep
A spa day
A night on the town without the kids
A romantic weekend getaway
A tasty homemade meal
Check off some of those handyman projects you have been meaning to get to

Ladies, I hope you get what you are looking for this Valentine's Day, but remember what is important.. A happy healthy pregnancy, so if you don't get that special gift just be satisfied in knowing the best gift of all will soon be here. Your bundle(s) of joy. Happy Valentine's Day!

Body Painting for Pregnant Women.

I was reading an interesting article on www.lilsugar.com on 5 ways to document your pregnancy. The article mentioned the usual trends from keeping a belly growth chart to doing a belly cast, but the most interesting to me was having a picture taken of your painted pregnant body. Featured was the works of European make up artist and photographer Julia Francis for Embody.

I could not locate a specific company here in Columbus, Ohio that catered to this trend, but I would love to hear any mama's out there that may know an artist/photographer who can help Columbus Mama's document their pregnancy in this way.

Take a look at the photo gallery at www.embody.org.uk (be warned, they show it all!)

I am not sure that I would have been brave enough to do this during my pregnancy, but who knows you may want to give it a try.

Welcome!

I have been baby planning and consulting friends and family for some time now and have decided to make things official, so I began The Mama Mosaic a baby planning and consulting company in Columbus, Ohio. While experience is always important, I wanted to supplement my experience with an actual certification and am in the final stages of doing so. I am currently working with the International Academy of Baby Planner Professionals to achieve this goal and will need a few volunteers to complete the process. If you are an expectant mother and are interested in becoming a volunteer please contact me (see the contact me link) and I will share with you how you can help; however I can sum it up by saying FREE SERVICES TO YOU!

I am also pleased to announce that fantastic things are happening at The Mama Mosaic. The launch of the company website is scheduled to take place this spring... so keep posted. (http://www.themamamosaic.com/)
